Healthy newborn in NICU at GMC Doda after recovery

In a remarkable achievement for neonatal care, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College (GMC) Doda successfully managed and discharged a newborn weighing an astonishing 6 kilograms at birth, marking one of the heaviest deliveries recorded at the institution.

The baby was born on October 25, 2025, at 1:20 PM, to a diabetic mother, who faced a critical situation as the newborn developed severe respiratory distress within the first 30 minutes of life. Immediately recognizing the urgency, the healthcare team admitted the infant to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for advanced management.

Due to the baby’s large-for-gestational-age classification and evident respiratory challenges, specialized neonatal respiratory support was promptly initiated. Healthcare providers closely monitored the baby’s respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological activity.

Over the subsequent days, the infant began to show positive signs of improvement, allowing the medical team to gradually reduce respiratory support. By maintaining stable independent breathing and normal oxygenation for the final 72 hours before discharge, the baby exhibited significant milestones in recovery with no episodes of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation.

After attaining sustained clinical stability, hospital authorities discharged the newborn in a healthy condition, while advising routine follow-ups to ensure continued health. This case highlights not just the individual success of one baby but a significant triumph for the entire NICU at GMC Doda.

The successful management was led by the Head of the Department of Pediatrics, Dr. Najmus Saqib, in collaboration with faculty members Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma. This achievement reflects the extraordinary teamwork displayed by the dedicated team of senior and junior residents.

Moreover, special thanks go to the nursing and paramedical staff at GMC Doda. Their vigilant monitoring, compassionate care, and unwavering commitment were critical to the baby’s recovery and highlight the crucial role of support staff in neonatal health.

This achievement showcases the growing neonatal expertise at GMC Doda and underscores the institution’s commitment to providing quality, evidence-based, and compassionate healthcare to newborns and children across the region. The success of the NICU in managing one of the heaviest newborns exemplifies the advanced standards of pediatric care that GMC Doda has established and aims to enhance in the future.
