The Congress party on Thursday launched a potent criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the escalating crisis of rising unemployment that has gripped India. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh accused Modi of being “always in election mode” while neglecting pressing economic issues that affect millions of Indians.
Ramesh’s statements come in the wake of alarming data released by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), which reported that India’s unemployment rate surged to 7.5% in October 2025, marking a six-month peak. The Congress party asserts that the Modi government’s past 11 years of misrule have adversely impacted every segment of society, fueling discontent across various sectors.
In a post shared on X in Hindi, Ramesh expressed profound concern over the plight of diverse groups: “Students, youth, farmers, labourers, workers, shopkeepers, employees, businessmen – not a single section is happy with this government.” He highlighted the interlinked issues of rising inflation, depreciating currency value, and the widening gap between the rich and poor, all of which severely burden poorer and middle-class families.
Ramesh reinforced his point by stating that the alarming rate of unemployment has become a critical issue. He noted that the job losses across various sectors have been staggering. “Millions of people have lost their jobs across sectors, including construction and IT-banking. Over 90 lakh people have lost jobs in the construction industry alone, while the number of salaried jobs has decreased by 25 lakh,” he commented, underscoring the urgent need for government intervention.
Despite these pressing challenges, Ramesh argued that the current administration remains unaffected, stating that such alarming figures have emerged year after year under Modi’s leadership, yet no actionable solutions have manifested. He targeted the Prime Minister directly, accusing him of indifference: “It seems Modi ji has no concern for the youth of this country. Always in election mode, he is busy crafting new speeches and narratives to distract the public instead of solving the unemployment crisis.”
