Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has sanctioned ₹30.14 crore for various welfare schemes, aimed at benefiting construction workers in the region. The amount will be directly transferred to eligible beneficiaries under the J&K Building & Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board (JKBOCWWB) initiatives.
Officials confirmed that all Assistant Labour Commissioners have received allocations to ensure immediate transfers into the bank accounts of registered construction workers. This swift action emphasizes the government’s focus on supporting the vulnerable labour segment.
The welfare assistance under this financial sanction includes a range of flagship schemes designed to uplift those working in the construction sector. Categories covered by the assistance include education support, disability assistance, aid for chronic illnesses, and marriage assistance. The scheme also allocates funds for the next of kin of deceased workers and offers meritorious awards for the children of registered workers.
During a recent meeting of the JKBOCWWB held in July, CM Abdullah highlighted the importance of broadening the definition of ‘construction worker.’ He aimed to ensure that all vulnerable labourers, particularly those in the unorganised sector, can benefit from these welfare measures.
The Chief Minister stressed that the government is keen on exploring innovative policy mechanisms to enhance coverage and ensure financial security for workers. Abdullah expressed his administration’s commitment to aligning the Board’s operations with national best practices in labour welfare.
“Construction workers are the backbone of our infrastructure development and deserve comprehensive and timely support,” stated CM Abdullah, reaffirming his government’s commitment to the rights and dignity of workers in the state.
In a related emotional address, Chief Minister Abdullah also expressed profound grief over a tragic bus accident that occurred in Medina, Saudi Arabia. The accident, which involved a bus carrying Indian Umrah pilgrims, took place early this morning.
He conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and offered prayers for the swift recovery of those injured in this unfortunate incident. According to initial reports, the bus, transporting 46 Indian pilgrims, collided with a tanker while en route from Mecca to Medina. The tragic collision reportedly resulted in the death of 45 pilgrims, with only one survivor suffering serious injuries.
This incident has raised concerns in the Indian community abroad and prompted calls for ensuring the safety of Indian pilgrims during religious trips. Abdullah’s heartfelt message underscores his dedication to addressing the welfare of citizens, whether at home or abroad.
